Club football in Nigeria dates back to 1906, but it wasn't until the establishment of the Lagos District Amateur Football Association (LDAFA) in 1932 that it became well-organized. The Nigeria Football Association was formed in 1945, and the Governor's Cup was established that same year. The Challenge Cup, as it was later known, became the most iconic domestic competition in the country, producing legendary teams and players until the end of the 1980s. In 1972, league football was introduced, and it became professionalized in 1990.

Despite being the most popular sport in the country, Nigerian football has struggled to keep up with European leagues in terms of television viewership and popularity among football enthusiasts. This lack of excitement has led to empty stadiums, discouraging returns for all parties involved, including footballers, coaches, administrators, and investors. However, football still holds a special place in the hearts of Nigerians, making it a crucial factor in evaluating the government's contributions to sports development.
